Impressive! I never would have gotten that one.

He was beginning to think he was in over his head. This mare obviously had some experience with riddles. It would be hard keeping up with her. But he always did love a challenge.

Frolic beamed, clearly pleased with herself. Perfect! Now they were getting somewhere.

Thanks! Alright, try this one on. Voiceless it cries, wingless flutters, toothless bites, mouthless mutters. Can you guess it?

He thought it over, dissecting each little part and trying to make sense of it.

Is it an echo?

He would need a hint if he got it wrong. A BIG hint.

She shook her head, rather pleased to have stumped him again. Taking pity, she quickly added An echo has no bite, yet you're fairly close. Keep thinking.

Fairly close? What's fairly close to an echo that also has a bite? He got another idea, but it also had no bite. Oh well, worth a shot.

Is it sound? Or words?

Frolic shook her head again, wondering if he would persevere.

It makes sound, and bites with cold. You're on the right path, but not quite there.
