Ah, well naturally the black stallion had left an impression upon the mare. It was rather unavoidable, considering he had made her what she was.

Riddle challenge, Shiro asked, perking instantly as they stepped into the shadows between the peaks, I had a similar match between another recently involving little songs we know.

No, Caustic snapped, stepping closer to Shiro as his voice crackled, No singing.

Surprised, Shiro jerked his head back and blinked for a moment, not quite sure what to make of that. Who didn't enjoy singing?

Very well then, what do you suggest we do?

Walk.

That got a snort; and with that, the gleaming white stallion turned away from his companion to give Sunspot a brilliant smile. I'm not much good at riddles, I'm afraid, but I don't think we're too far from the beach either. Do you know any good water based games?

Caustic grunted and walked a little faster.

He thought for a moment before saying I'm sorry I don't. Neither him or Batsy were very good swimmers. Yet once they got in the water it was hard to get them out. He suddenly got an idea. Wanna have a joke off? See who can tell the funniest joke? After all, almost everyone loved a good joke.

That brought both of them to a halt.

Joke? I don't really know any jokes.

What is a... Joke? Caustic added, squinting curiously at Shiro.

Honestly, I don't really know.

He blinked at them. They don't know what jokes are? Batsy told them all the time trying to get him to laugh. (The way she pouts after is usually funnier than the joke itself.)

A joke is where you say something trying to make others laugh. Like "what did one plant say to the other? Leaf me alone, I'm bushed." I heard that one from my Bonded so it's not very good.

A Hey echoed over to them right after he said that. He blanched and an ear flicked back. Curse those bat ears!

They glanced at each other, a small grin on Shiro's face from the 'hey' that had drifted by. Apparently his bonded hung around to keep a close eye on him.

'Leaf me alone, I'm bushed?' Back home the only reason we laugh is from sheer joy, or else in spirit of silliness. I think the hardest I ever laughed was while visiting Flint, and that was because while he got a drink our Bonded got this wry little grin on her kitsune face and started chanting 'chug, chug, chug!' It was ridiculously humorous and turned into a sort of contest on how long he could drink.

I do not laugh.

With our luck if you ever did laugh it would make ears bleed, shatter the mind and then end in death.

It does. I laugh only while killing.

Harsh.

Caustic grinned darkly. Very.

They were walking again, now completely entrenched between the peaks of the mountains. With the shadows that coated the passage the air dropped a few degrees in temperature, but the promising scent of sun and seasalt stung their noses.

I think the closest thing I know to a joke is the riddles we all do with our bonded. This is a favorite of mine; what may hug you with the warmth of the three suns, yet can not be touched?

Caustic squinted his eyes, making a mild 'ew' face. This was not the sort of riddles that he passed with their Bonded. Hugs. Honestly. He would rather travel in silence; they did that frequently, and he never understood other creature's need for such chatter.

Yet he would let Shiro have this bit of fun. As a stallion under his care, Caustic was bound to grant him certain liberties to help ensure his overall well being.

At the least it beats a 'joke' over what talking plants have to say. They grant much more interesting conversation than 'I'm bushed,' though it's a far cry from my own sort of riddles.

She tells you different riddles?

Of course, you dingbat. She matches each sort with the way our minds work.

Shiro blinked at him a moment, vaguely surprised. All he could utter was a simple Oh.

Caustic snorted and focused again on the path through the mountains. The small white stallion was entirely too cute, too soft, too accommodating at times. If he didn't watch out he would find himself growing fond of a creature that could so completely give way to dominance without losing his own romantic flair for life. It was no wonder Flint had fallen so madly in love with the fellow.

Though if he were to be honest it was entirely too late for that. Caustic was fond of all under his care, to varying degrees.

All under our care, he mentally amended. It wouldn't do to exclude their bonded; she had dominion over not only the others but himself as well, and he had best remember that else he wish for another lesson in being the second in command. Although she would use the term 'second caretaker,' as she claimed to be a healer rather than a warrior such as himself. Claimed was the key aspect to him. For one who titled herself a healer among her kind she sure could kick his tail between his ears if he forgot his place. He had no plans to do so again and repeat the experience.

The thought made him let out a rough snort.
Healers, he thought with an odd mix of affection and disgust.

If you give your Bonded attitude what does she do? he asked thinking of the newly acquired bruise on his flank.

'I pity the fool that gives either one of them attitude.' he thought to himself.
