She was startled when he laughed. This time, she was unable to hide it. Her fear was reflecting in her eyes, wondering what was wrong with him. She turned and walked back into the water, moving over to him. She reached her muzzle over to his shoulder, flicking back an ear.

"What are Ares? And whats making you act this way?"

He jerked away from her touch, startled. In an odd way it touched him, that she would approach him, but he didn't trust himself now. Not with the memories running through his veins.

He bit back the sadistic leer that threatened to spread over his features. He kept his eyes closed, speaking to himself and the darkness before him. "Ares was the god of war. The Masters gave his name to the arena where we used to...fight..."

Fight, hardly the word to describe it. How could he explain the way the Ares changed him? He scrabbled for the words against the fire running through him.

"In, abstractness...it is like a drug. Here we were broken...changed...into what we are now. It...it is the thrill of the battle, the rush of the kill. It's that savagery without laws or boundaries that we who fought in there were taught to need, to want, to enjoy."

His eyes snapped open for only a brief moment, showing an demonic golden glow, the pupil a mere slit in bloodshot iris. He closed them quickly. "It marked us all. I left it, but it is a part of me still, and will be forever."

She jerked her muzzle away when he moved, mentally scolding herself. She held in a gasp when she saw his eyes and tightly shut her own, pushing the image out of her head. The words he used made him sound like some sort of blood-thirsty monster.

"Isn't there someway that you can change? A way to forget about it all?" She opened her eyes for only a moment, then shut them tightly again and reached her muzzle to his nose once again.

"I wish I could make it all go away... Make everything better."

"There...is nothing anyone can do about it."

He opened his eyes, now the regular crimson for a time. "To forget my past, it would be an insult to those who could not escape as I did. To forget, I would erase their memories, their pain from this world."

He brushed his muzzle against hers briefly, to give her a short comfort, almost an apology. "...is there anything else?"

She quickly drew back, her eyes snapping open. "Wouldn't it be best to forget them, then? To remember the pain they went through would almost be as if they were living it once again... Would it not be better to let them sleep in peace?"

She shook her head. Then after a moment of thought, she nodded. "Why didn't you tell me this when we first met?" She spoke softly, gazing down at the water.

He smiled, a face both amused and bitter at once. "They are the kind of ghost that do not want to rest in peace..."

He looked up at the sky, almost as if he could see their shadows flitting about him. "They live on, through me, through my pain and my struggle. It is the the only gift, the only recompense I can give to them. Besides," he stopped, a golden glow flickering in his eye. "I cannot give it up and pretend it did not happen. My curse is also my greatest power, as a warrior. We thrive upon pain."

He glanced at her out of the corner of his eye. "As to why I did not tell you, the simple fact that you did not ask very deeply into it. My past is not something I wear as a badge of pride."
