He couldn't seem to stop chuckling with Peppermint. She was too much, she really was. The thought made him chuckle again and he tilted his head south saying, "A river, a big one with clear waters and gentle currents. It's right over here, come one."

Leading again, he trotted a couple miles in the direction he'd indecated and then jumped in without pausing when they got to the lower part of the Fyn river branch, where another, thicker one was better for what he wanted to show her. The closest he came to pausing was he tossed her a look over his shoulder, half laughing as his hooves left the ground.

Peppermint followed along behind Sparkle. She heard him chuckle to himself, and felt happy that he was happy. As they trotted along, she absorbed herself in looking at the landscape. This area was similar to where she lived, but at the same time there were subtle differences that caught her attention. The grass they trotted on was colored like the grass she knew, but the leaves were slightly broader, and more rounded at the tips. The trees were a little different too, with branches come out at different angles and places than she was used to, with leaves bigger or smaller than what she would have expected at home.

The miles they covered to get to the river seemed short to her, and she found herself perhaps even a little disappointed when they arrived at their destination so soon. Unlike Sparkle, she did pause a moment at the river's edge, but only to study the cattails growing the edge--their tuffs grew longer and narrower than the ones she knew at home. She saw Sparkle looking back at her, however, and didn't pause long. Smiling at him, she gathered herself and leaped into the river after him.

Grinning as she followed him in, Sparkle turned and swam a little way upstream, until they reached his fovorite spot. Here, he settled to the bank near a beautiful coral and motioned with his head at the sea floor, the sunlight rippling over the small waves and brightening all the colors of the life that called this place home. Then he surfaced, taking a deep, satisfied breath before turning to see if Peppermint had come up as well. He spent a lot of time under water to see how the lights danced so he was slightly used to having to hold his breath for so long, but he wasn't so sure about her. They'd made good time with little current to slow them and he'd swam a at a good speed, though he had to admit that he'd be no match for most in the water. Mostly he stayed pretty much still, watching and letting his mind wander.

Peppermint followed Sparkle, swimming with strong even strokes as the entered deeper water. She was a bit surprised when Sparkle let himself sink down under the water. She peered down through the rippling water at him, and saw him looking around as if at a wonderful view. She wasn't sure what he was seeing, but she shrugged to herself and sunk down under the water as well.

Once she was under the water, she looked downwards first. She could clearly see now the dappled pattern the light made on the sandy bottom and over the coral and water vegetation. She let out an "Oh" of surprise, but instead of sound, bubbles rose up. To her chargin, she realized that most of her air had gone into that 'Oh.' She quickly resolved not to do that again, and hurridly she swam towards the surface, breaking through with a gasp. Once she regained her breath again, she started feeling silly. "Can't believe I did that," she commented to herself with a head-shake of self derision. As she said it, she saw that Sparkle, who'd gone down long before her, had just barely come up.

He smiled at her, and with a small grin said, "Follow me and I'll really show you what we came here for. There's an area just over there behind the seaweed, Just wait till you see."

Then he dove back under, and led her to the spot showing off a coral that at first glance seemed to move. There were fish everywhere, the sun glinting off of their scales, everything in constant motion so that it looked like a mirage hiding a truer secret that few were allowed to see. This was why he loved the way water interacted with light.

Peppermint wondered what Sparkle had in store that was even better than what she'd seen, so she followed him under with quick eagerness. She kept in mind Sparkle's comments about light as she looked around the place he brought her to. She loved watching the fish dart about, and the way the light played over the coral was truly hypnotic.

Peppermint was enjoying the sights, but there was something else she found herself loving about being underwater--the currents. Here they were slow, slow, tiny whiskers of movement against her skin. Earlier they had been swifter and rippled through her coat in fast fluttering motions. They were like air currents, like the wind, only stronger and all around you. She found herself relaxing and letting the moving waters slowly sway her from side to side.
