"It would be harder to keep each other in site that way," Sparkle admitted with a grin. "I love it. Just say when and you'll be in for a good bit of work."

He pranced, chortling, and turned ina circle waiting for her signal that she was ready. This would be fun.

Peppermint laughed, very pleased that Sparkle liked her idea. "Okay, I'm ready. She lined herself up in start-of-race pose. One...two....three...GO!" With that, she darted forward. Here near the edge of the forest it was easy to keep inside patches of light--she chose a long winding patch of light that was unbroken until a fair way into the trees, and ran along it. As she ran, she reminded herself to keep one eye out for obstacles along the ground, and the other out for where Sparkle was going. She didn't wish to loose him among the trees.

Her patch of light ended, but she had already chosen out her next patch before she got there. She gathered herself up and leapt forward, trying her best to make sure her hooves didn't land in shadowed ground. This sun-patch wasn't nearly as long as the first, and she had to start looking for another almost immediately. She laughed excitedly as she bounded from sun-patch to sun-patch. At one point another tree root almost tripped her again, but her momentum carried her past the obstacle, and somehow she managed to get her legs under her again before she did more than stumble. She glanced over to see if Sparkle had noticed.

"Careful!" Sparkle cried a little way off to her right. She'd get hurt one time and he didn't want that. When she righted herself he let out a little air he'd pent up and then laughed as he brushed against the leaves in his leap to a sunspot. It was alot like galloping, you just had to be careful where you landed when your feet were ready to meet the ground agian. And it gave him cause to jump higher.

Careful to keep one eye on his new found friend Sparkle rushed forward and grinned as he thought of where the forest let out at. He as seeing more of Sionayra than he ever had before and all in one day. If things kept up he might even get to visit one of its islands. In the meantime though, he had to keep his hooves under him; the ground was tilting under him as they entered the mountains this forest grew out of.

She found herself blushing again when she heard Sparkle call out to her. Shoot, he did notice! she thought, feeling embarrased. So much for beating the trees! She knew her thought was silly, and it made her smile.

She came to the end of her sunpatch, and had to pause a moment as there wasn't another one as an obvious successor. She quickly located another, but the pause was enough that Sparkle passed her by. Determined not to fall behind, she gathered herself and made the long leap to the next spot of sunlight.

She noticed the ground beginning to rise, but the trees blocked her view of what might be ahead. "Hey Sparkle, are we close to some mountains or something?" she called out.

"These tree grow out of their foothills," Sparkle called, glancing back at her to make sure she wasn't too far behind. It was easy for someone to get lost out here. "They let up no too far from here but it's a good ways. I've got a surprise for you on the other side. So hurry up!"

He grinned, tossing his main as he leapt to the next patch, automatically finding every scrap of light he could. It kept his mind off of the fact that the trees were crowding a little closer than he liked in the day. He used everything to his advantage, sometimes just skimming a hoof over a patch a squirrel could have lain in.

"Ah good, I love surprises!" Peppermint called back. She grinned to herself--she hadn't meant to get ahead in this race, but being behind Sparkle gave her an opportunity to watch him. He really was doing an excellent job of making use of every little patch of sun. Still, he'd said to hurry up, so she surged forward with renewed engery. The trees were beggining to thin out again, giving her longer patches of sun to run in, and she managed finally to pull even with him again.

"You have to jump higher to cover the same distance when the ground's sloping," she observed, then "I think we're almost out of the trees."
