A River Flows Through It

River moved about cautiously, almost with a nervous twitch causing him to glance back over his shoulder from time to time. It seemed strange that a Serian could be so uncomfortable here, in Sionayra, in the Fields no less. One would think they'd be most comfortable here, in the land from whence they came.

But River's story is a little different, he'd been abandonned once, and then had great difficulty getting readopted a second time. Though he knew it was foolish, a little voice in the back of his head made him worry that he might have to stay here again, alone, unwanted.

He raised a mental hoof and attempted to squash that errant thought, but it was a slippery thing, and if he had had fingers, it would have slipped right through. Well, then he'd just have to ignore it, no matter how persistent it was.

Another form lingered nearby, simply a silhouette against the horizon. His little goat-like tail was flicking constantly, attempting to flick the flies of his flankes but failing miserably.

His mane, tail, and little flares above his hooves appeared to be an odd purple-orange mixture, blending together quite nicely. His coat colour was fairly similar, orange fading in to a bright yellow near his hindend. Then two horns grew from the top of his head, the sharp tips pointing ahead of him.

A beige lake surronded the pupils in his eyes, gaze settling upon the other stallion. He pranced to the side, making the native marking on his shoulder appear to move.

River saw movement out of the corner of his eye and he jumped to one side, turning in the air to face whatever might be sneaking up on him...to take him away...to that bad place...where he had to stay all alone...and...and...

It was just another Serian stallion. He breathed a sigh of relief, the deep breath making the markings on his back shimmer in the sunlight, as if he were partly made of water. Mentally he scolded himself for being so jumpy. He was completely embarassed, knowing the other stallion had seen.

"Umm, Hi" was about all he could muster while he sorted out his brains. Oh yeah, one should introduce oneself. "I'm River." There, that should buy some time to compose himself and stop looking like a total idiot.

Wisp saw the startled movements of the other male, and smiled warmly. He couldn't say that he didn't know how it felt to be paranoid... Or not wanting to go back to that... Place.

The smile didn't falter as he dipped his head politly, the tips of his horns bearly touching the ground before he lifted his head again.

"I'm Wisp. Is something bothering you?" He felt somehow compelled to ask, to know what was causing such a stallion to be jumpy. Wisp was just so nosey...

River returned the bow, his mane briefly covering his face. When he raised his head he too was smilling.

"I'm River....and, umm no...nothing's bothering me." River was a lousy liar, but he felt ashamed of being afraid of the Fields, it all seemed so silly. He knew that SunBlind would always make sure he had a home, but he couldn't get rid of that nagging voice in the back of his head. And here in the Fields, it wasn't just a voice, it was downright screaming at him.

He shook his head, as if that would dislodge the voice. He pictured it falling out one of his ears, like a marble, dropping to the ground and rolling away in the grass.

Didn't work, but determined to ignore it, he decided to engage the other stallion in conversation, maybe Wisp's voice would be louder than that of the one in his head.

"Nice weather today, isn't it?"

Wisp gave him a puzzled look, then smiled again "Nice to meet you."

Then he nodded, slowly tilting his head up to gaze warmly at the clouds; some fluffy, some wispy and faint. Yet just because they were small and almost transparent, didn't mean they weren't there.

"Very nice. Not too hot, not too cold. Perfect summer weather."

His gaze was lowered once again, gazing at River as if he were attempting to see through the other stallion. Wisp wasn't all good at talking, he hadn't been a very social serian in the first place... But he was good at reading body language... It just tended to take him a little longer to figure it out.
