Mixed Up Matchings [Open]

Take your Serians here to chat or just roam their homeland.
The sun glitters above vast fields ringed by verdant forests to the north, mountains to the south and east, and wide rivers to the west.

Mixed Up Matchings [Open]

Sparkle trotted at an easy pace, following a small brook in an absent sort of manner. Something had been different for a while now, causing a strange sort of churning upheaval within him.

It was dusk, the air redolent with jasmine and honeysuckle, the tender grasses enticing the nose as they passed beneath his hooves. There were patches of forest he could have played in, as well as areas filled with the distinct light of dusk, yet they were passed without a glance. There were flowers dancing along the shores of the brooke and any number of gopher holes that would have made for an excellent game, yet they went unnoticed.

Things had been changing for him, changing within him, and tonight it had proved to be too much. It had built within him for quite some time, had started out as a small hiccup in his heart, but now..

Now Sparkle was not in the mood to play.

She had been running since the sky was black, sprinting so fast she was practically a blur for as long as her legs could keep her moving. Sweat had long since darkened her coat, turning it from its usual neon green to a mossy color and caused her deep green mane and wispy white tail stick to her body. Despite her rather tired appearance her pink eyes were dancing. She loved to run; to do so was pounded in the very fiber of her being.

And then she tripped in a gopher hole. The small misstep left her sprawled on the ground, giggling to herself. She was never especially graceful except at a full-out gallop, at any other speed she was a regular klutz. She rose quickly to her feet, tossing a glance in all directions. Good, no one was there to see her make a fool of herself. She continued to laugh, though she was now breathing heavily. Time to migrate to one of the brooks close by.

She wandered over, her mane continually falling over her eyes. Gosh, she must’ve been a sight for sore-eyes. Gratefully she dropped her neck and sipped from the ribbon of water. Without thinking she high-stepped through the shallow water, splashing the water up her chest and stomach. Her heart rate and breathing had already slowed considerably, enabling her to look around at her surroundings.

It was quite pretty, with wildflowers, trees off in the distance, and of course all that sweet grass that would make any Serian a glutton. It was the first time she had galloped through here, and she was lost. The feeling was a familiar one, however, and she chased it away with a shake of her head. How was it possible to be lost in her homeland? She’d find her way soon enough. Plus, anywhere she could be alone was a paradise in her opinion.

Snorting, he shook his head and came around long enough to drink from the stream he'd been following. There was no telling how long he'd been moving, much less how far he had gone.

Could be worse. I could be lost, on top it all.

Not that it would have made much of a difference. He was lost in another sense of the term already, after all.

Tossing his main, he sighed and looked around with glazed eyes, not really seeing much of anything. He had no idea what was happening to him, no idea how to deal with it.. Only that it was something he would have to work through, knowledge imparted upon him by his ever mysterious bonded.

I wish I didn't have to face this.

Ah, but maybe he didn't.. At least not right away. There was someone nearby, someone he hadn't met before. Maybe he could make a new friend and distract himself at the same time..

"Out for a run, I take it."

Re: Mixed Up Matchings [Open]

She lay down by the river on a bed of reeds and river stones, nice and smooth. With a quiet nicker she bent her legs daintily under her, with those cursed strands of green mane still stubbornly limp on her neck. The flies waltzing through the air were easily scared away with a twitch of her tail and after a few deep breaths her heartbeat was no longer pounding in her ears. Maybe she hadn’t run as long as she thought. Or maybe all the long jogs had increased her endurance…

What was that on the rocks a few steps away? Thoughts of better endurance and the like were cast away with childlike simplicity; her interest was immediately piqued. Lurching oh-so-gracefully to her feet she wandered over carefully to her target, neck stretched out and ears pricked forward in pure curiosity. The object of her extreme interest was…a lizard. A cute little thing: one obviously none too happy at its new position in the shade. A playful snort in its direction was enough to send it scampering off.

So immersed had she been in her new little friend she didn’t notice the other until he spoke. The sudden noise against the silence spooked her; her neck shot up and she had to quell a neigh of surprise. She was new to meeting others, after all. And first impressions were so important…

But maybe just start with a reply. “Oh, um. Yes." She looked up, well aware of what she must look like. Wet with sweat and river water and now probably looking like a fool after her honest excitement with the lizard. Under the fur of her cheeks she blushed. “But I’ve never been out this far before. I think I’m lost.” She chuckled brightly, looking around. Yep, she was lost for sure. "I figured if worse came to worse I could just go North. I'm pretty sure that's where I came from, at any rate." She shrugged to keep herself from rambling; it was such a common trait with her.

Re: Mixed Up Matchings [Open]

He had to smile. She was quite the sight, no doubt of that, but at least it appeared to be an honest run instead of the ones he used to take himself.

"I've been all over these lands more times than I could possibly hope to remember," he nickered as he stepped closer and lapped at the stream. "If you'd like company on your way back, though, I'm more than willing. I can show you this place where the butterflies dance on the flowers and beg to be chased.."

I had enjoyed that place, once. Before.. This.

"I don't think I've seen you before, actually. I'm Sparkle, son of Shine and foal of Flora."

He pulled his head up here, frankly surprised. He had fought and fought against this change within him, but it seemed he could fight it no longer. Now if only he could understand it..

"Where are you headed? I'm decent at knowing the general location of the various portals and homes of the bonded within these lands. If it's far enough, maybe I can teach you a new game."

Not 'maybe we could play a game,' not this time. He had, in fact, yet to offer to play at all. He wasn't even thinking of this mare as a play-mate; simply someone that needed help finding their way home. He couldn't help but think that Amber would worry if she knew these things.. It was most unlike him.

Re: Mixed Up Matchings [Open]

“Really?” She asked, her darting pink eyes looking around. It seemed the land stretched on for endless miles, all hills and valleys and forests. “I can’t imagine. I hardly know this place at all – any of it. But then, I’ve always been bad with navigation…” She laughed again. “I guess getting lost is my specialty.”

Whirl glanced at him warily from under the curtain of her mane. “I don’t want to bother you or anything…” She started to explain earnestly. She didn’t really know where she was going anyway. At the thought of butterflies, however – all ready to be hunted – she nearly wiggled in anticipation. That seemed as good a destination as any. She always liked chasing butterflies.

“Oh,” she had completely forgot. “Yeah, I’m pretty new here.” Sort of. She didn’t feel like she belonged here yet, at any rate. “You’re actually the first person I’ve met, Sparkle,” her mouth twitched in a smile. “I’m Whirl.”

“Nowhere in particular.” Whirl stated simply. “I like the feeling of being lost. It’s very peaceful,” she said, feeling rather foolish at the words. She turned away from him with a shrug of her shoulders and looked at the forests in the distance. “Maybe I’ll end up going over there.” The shade of the trees would be nice once the sun fully rose in the sky. But she wasn’t sure it would be far enough, and she liked this new acquaintance of hers. He wasn’t laughing at her nonsensical comments, at least.
