The remaining distance to the small hut that Surisha chose to call a home was full of starts and stops, many times because of having to lay low to avoid being seen by troops that weren't too far off, and other times because of an innocuous rustling that seemed to always happen about six paces behind them. Tense, tired, and wanting only to be home again, the party was silent as the relentless Zaeem did his best to protect their bodies, wondering if he was already too late to protect their spirits. The group seemed broken on some vital level.

It wasn't until they were nearly there, however, that he was shown how much spirit was left. With a choking cry a horrid figure burst out of the brush behind them, the dark, indiscriminant shape of nightmares. Zaeem automatically started to intervene, but before he could do more than take half a step the creature was felled. When he looked back at the source he thought he might cry, though he was wanting for the exact reason why. Both his daughter and her new watcher had joined together to spell this -thing- into immobility, locking ever particle of volintary muscle in its body. Runa's eyes were bright with something that was akin to exhausted worry, but Surisha's.....they had the flames of fierce protectevness that bordered on insanity. It was the same look he'd last seen in his mate's eyes when they were seperated.

Still light or no light, spirit or no spirit, it was clear everyone was taxed beyond endurance. He took the charge of gathering their attacker and carrying it inside with them, knowing it might come in handy at a later time as he ushered everyone quickly into the sanctuary.

Nobody noticed the gentle rustle of plants six paces behind them.
