I really love Cyclone's mane and tail. So fluffy! I think I'm not quite ready for a winged Serian... if that makes sense? They're really pretty, but I don't think they 'fit' with me haha. I have both feet very much on the ground at this point. But I do love the color palette for Arctic Winds - very subdued.

Can I ask another question here? I was just curious how colors/overall look of 2nd generation Serians come about. Is there a genetics thing going on behind the scene, or is it a little more loose? I hope that's all right to ask, I'm just curious. The babies are so so cute!

It's definitely more loose ^^; I kind of like to switch it up like that! I do have guidelines, though:

1) Foals -cannot- have features that are not in their bloodline
2) Features can, however, be exaggerated and/or interpreted differently based on my current artistic style and also allowing for small genetic variations in size and shape. So, a foal can inherit its father's antlers, but while the father had a large set, the foal has smaller, thinner ones with fewer tines, or the reverse.
3) Colors are not tied to a single feature. Coat colors in a parent might be eye or hoof colors in the child. Patterns, however, tend to stay more true to the parents' form. In general ^^

There are a few exceptions to the rules, but there are usually reasons for them, and they don't happen very often at all. A good example of a foal is Ovela:

You can see how my artistic style changed over the years, so that definitely played into the factor, but the original outline was fairly old, so the choices to make the webs thicker to be more prominent like Vex's as well as keeping just a hint of the color shift from Masquerade and making the web form a mask to vaguely match her as well were always a part of the plan. The hooves were from Vex's hooves and the name/tail were actually the same orange as Masquerade's darkest orange in her mane, until I went a bit more extreme on the fire shades ^^;

I hope that answers the question! Sorry if I went into a bit too much detail there ^^;;;;

In general, though, while I like it when the foals resemble the parents, I try very hard to give them each their own individual look and feel, so that they are unpredictable and hopefully a really pleasant surprise ^^

Also, West/Sign's foal Keidas is a good example as to a less extreme matchup of parental features :3

Ah, no, that's really cool! I sort of figured the first guideline and the second one a little, but I like the third one a lot. I would imagine that's the one that keeps foals from looking too much like their parents? Sorry, I don't mean to pester you with questions, I just like seeing how this kind of stuff works haha.

It's amazing seeing how your style has changed over time! I am not an artist at all, so it kind of just looks like you magically jumped from point A to point B, which I imagine was not the case? Haha, in any case, very neat to see.

Hehe, yeah, a lot of the art changes happened once I got a tablet! It's so much easier to color when you're not using a mouse >< But my style has definitely changed over the years, that's for sure. If you want to see a more natural progression of the "tablet" styles, you can go here:

The latest two Serians I've worked on have been rather soft in coloring, but that's not a trend I'm planning on continuing, it just seemed to fit their pose/coloring.

And no problem about the questions, it's fun to answer them :)
