Once, long ago, there was a battle between clans of the undying race of Rhyandrithae. Called the Fey, this race possesed great powers but took for granted the land on which they lived. Long, terrible battles were fought, and many lives were lost. Realizing too late, the Fey found that their populations were dying out, and few had lived beyond what had been called the Cataclysmic Wars. Those that survived were so overcome with loss, they retreated into the Earth, determined to end their days away from the battlegrounds, hatred, and violence. Leaving to find solace from their abominable actions, they abandoned their once-beautiful world, turning their backs on history. Only the creatures of the world remained above the surface, trying to survive in the desolate, magic-wrecked lands.

Unbeknownst to the fey, the land they had so slaughtered with their power had retained the magic used against it, storing it in the soil of the barren land. Slowly, as life returned, seeds sprouted and trees grew again, but not as they had before. The plants had grown from the magic-filled soil, using the power, feeding off it, until the plants became as the fey were; made of magic. The surviving creatures fed off these plants, allowing the magic to enter them and change them. Birds of ice and fire, hares so swift, none could overtake them, unicorns, pegasi, and gryphons were born. Every creature changed, becoming more able and powerful. Those that did not benefit from the power were easy prey, and soon died out. Similar creatures bred, until species were formed, and they thrived. But soon, the newly healed world would suffer once more.

Storms created from magical backlash weathered the land, each one worse than the one before, tearing and destroying the lands. The mightiest of the creatures gathered together to create the Seven Altars, each surrounded by the environment it represented.  The Altar of Red Sands, Altar of Forest Song, Altar of Arctic Winds, Altar of the Sacred Sea, Altar of the Summer Storm, Altar of Eternal Sun, Altar of Deep Shadows. The world sent forth it's own altar with the magic it had gathered, joining in this last attempt. This final move created the mightiest altar, the Altar of Celestial Light.

Born from these were creatures of magnificent spirit and power, most had some of both magic and fighting ablility, but some, called Elementals and Warriors, excelled at one but lacked in the other. Elementals were the mages, each possessing magic of such magnitude, they could control the sudden storms, and Warriors had little magic, but much strength and agility. The Serians, as they took to calling themselves, kept growing in number, raising more of their number from the Altars and even finding mates and breeding. New foals were born from the Altars, the powers inside deciding when that was necessary. Taking an equine form along with various traits from other creatures, the Serians were the most deadly, swift and graceful of all. The mightiest of the Serians, the Rogues, possessed unusual Talents and appearances.

The Serians' story is still being written, however, and though they do not need to use their magic much anymore, mysterious foals are still born, and the altars are never neglected. Groups of two and more Serians are beginning to form, called Circles, and in these groups are an even number of both mares and stallions. Elementals and Warriors tend to form separate Circles, but they have been known to mingle. Circles, though like equine herds in many ways, are more exclusive. The Serians are any mixture of equine and another creature, but resemble their equine sides more.

But it was soon discovered that the Serians' power and life force increases when they 'bond' with another creature. This is no ordinary bond, however. Once forged, this bond can almost never be broken. Only if one of the bonded creatures grows weary and rejects the Serian can it sever. Thankfully, this rarely happens and after many months, the severed Serians grow strong again. The fate of the Serians is in their bondeds' hands.
